"THE SMILE"
"You might be tossing about in a sea of despair. You might even feel as if your life may crash about you and you will never again be healed, whole or happy.
They say Robert Louis Stevenson told the story first. It's worth retelling: It seems a storm caught a sea-faring vessel off a rocky coast. The wind and waves threatened to drive the boat to its destruction.
In the midst of the terror, one daring passenger, contrary to orders, made his way across the ship. Groping along a passageway, he found the pilot house. There he beheld an intriguing sight; the ship's pilot was lashed to his post. Secure against the raging elements, he held the wheel fast, turning the ship, inch by inch, once more out to sea. The pilot saw the watcher and smiled.
The daring passenger found his way below deck where other passengers huddled. Encouragingly, he said, "I have seen the face of the pilot, and he smiled.... ALL IS WELL."

There are times we need to hear those words and be reminded "all is well". My heart is always encouraged and my faith bolstered as I remember that my Pilot smiles in the midst of my raging storm!
The story tells us "The pilot saw the watcher and smiled." I love to think about that.......He never takes His loving gaze off of His child and we must continually focus our gaze upon Him and rest in the comfort of His Smile!!
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and He brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm,
and He guided them to their desired haven.
Psalm 107:28-30
Pause for a moment and reach out to Him and let His smile minister peace, strength and encouragement to your heart and mind..............His glorious countenance and loving eyes are upon you, always! Can you see your Pilot smiling at you now?

Jackie, this brought tears to my eyes. How beautiful the analogy of looking at God in the midst of storms and "HE SMILES". I really needed to read that today.
Things have been a bit overwhelming of late. My husband is scheduled for surgery on Feb.1 (hip replacement). He has Avascular Necrosis (bone death) and its tough to see this big man reduced to a walker, bent over and unable to do much. I know God is in the midst of the storm, but occasionally, like Peter, we take our eyes off him, when we are overwhelmed. Thanks for the reminder that "sll is well."
Hugs,
Rose
What a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it.
Short but powerful! What an encouragement I heard/read to start my day! Thanks for this. Glory to God! Love and blessings to you.
Oh I LOVED this. Just what I needed to hear this morning and I am going to remember that story in my mind. I of course KNOW the Lord knows every little detail of things going on, but this was just a good "picture" of it all in my mind. Thanks for sharing it and have a good day. Blessings, Debbie
What a great story! I love this!
I just love the picture of God as our Pilot, smiling at us. And then us knowing that everything is OK.
Love to you!
I have never heard this story but what a wonderful one that brings great wisdom and encouragement. How I needed reassurance today!
Very encouraging, to know the "Pilot" is smiling at us in our storms. Thank you Jackie..had quite a riptide at work today..kinda sucked me in. I will set my mind on Jesus' smile.
Thanks sweet friend!

Jackie.. I wanted to share with you something that happened to me a few years back. I was on the back end of a terrible time in my life.. It had been a two or three year struggle and during the struggle I held on to my faith and my actions as a Christian was foremost in my mind. Through it all I refused to retaliate or treat the other people with anything other than love.. It was at the end of the struggle and I lost everything, home and business and land but I did as the Father God asked... It was one evening while sitting alone studying and reading my word I had the strangest feeling that someone was watching.... it was then that I felt HIM smile...... I can tell you that I felt HIM smile...... It brought such joy and peace and contentment to my soul...... HE loves HIS kids..... HE rejoices over us with dancing.......
Thanks for the beautiful reminder.
What a great story. The smile of the Pilot is definitely reassuring. :)
I, too, need a reminder that "All is well." This week is a series of ups and downs, but I feel the ever-present reminder in my spirit that, indeed, all is well.
Thank you, friend.
Great Post, I haven't seen the face of the Pilot, YET, but my four year old has and I believe every word of it.
Thanks for the sharing this story. It's always a great reminder!!
Just beautiful, and so encouraging...thanks Jackie! (smile)

What a wonderful and thought provoking post to ponder Jackie! Oh to see His smiling face. Thanks for the encouragement today!
Jackie,
YES! Thank you for the reminder. And I'm smiling back.
I was once on a flight home and the plane was rocking badly, I remember the flight attendant saying to me and my young daughter,"Watch my face. If I'm smiling, it's ok." We watched him the whole bumpy way and felt such relief.
Thanks for a great devotional thought to start my day:)
Love the name of your blog--Dianne
Just what I needed today! I needed to be reminded that the Pilot is smiling as he sees me because he knows that is well. Thank you for writing this down and blessing us with it. I had never heard it before.

Let me tell you what speaks to me the most about this story...
the pilot being lashed to his post.
That preaches to my heart in profound measure!
Good to hear from you. Hope all is well.

Hi there, Jackie,
I'm so glad you stopped by my blog. It's nice to see you again!
What a beautiful story. I think what I liked best was the pilot smiling in the midst of the storm. Priceless. It's the perfect picture of Jesus smiling at us in our hardest moments.
Will you be attending She Speaks again this year? I'm planning on it, Lord willing.
Thanks you for stopping by, I will be back to visit when I get caught up...your blog looks great.

God bless you for this. I really needed this today. The Holy Spirit has been sending me messages like this all day long today. He is such an encourager! He knows what I need when I need it.
Isn't that the most comforting picture? To see the 'pilot' and know that all is well. It just brings a wonderful sigh to rest in the knowledge that He is in control.
Blessings.
Sonja
